CYCLONIC ACTIVITY OVER THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC AREA AND NEW-CALEDONIA (#1060)
A new cyclonic database over the New Caledonia warning area from 1977 to today has been developed. It gathers the track points and the most reliable characteristics possible of all cyclonic phenomena (from moderate depressions to tropical cyclones) regarding the New-Caledonian territory.
From this dataset, New-Caledonia government commissioned a full study of cyclonic winds risk exposure of New-Caledonian buildings. This work is intended to inform the local people and builders on the level of exposure to cyclonic winds throughout the territory. For this purpose, a map of reference wind speeds has been created.
This database also made it possible to correct the tracks and characteristics of some of the phenomena of the SPEArTC database from which Météo-France Nouvelle-Calédonie climatologists were able to study the cyclonic activity climatology over the SouthWest Pacific area, New Caledonia and Wallis-et-Futuna islands.
